EDITORIAL
Welcome to the August / September edition of the Sporting Motorist. My apologies for the newsletter being a bit late. I was competing at an historic meeting up at Eastern Creek earlier in the month. The meeting was a tribute to the Elfin marque and there were close to 30 Elfins present. With over 250 cars entered for the meeting it was a full-on weekend, blessed by good weather. Anyway, back to the activities in Tassie. Since the last newsletter, the club held its club day / supersprint early last month at Baskerville. Even though the weather was fine and the day ran well, we unfortunately had only 19 entries. If you were a competitor this was great, because you could keep doing laps until you ran out of petrol, or tyres, or both. Unfortunately, due to the lack of numbers, the event ran at a considerable loss. On the plus side, there was a good number of helpers and the day ran smoothly, so for all the competitors and helpers, thanks for your effort, hopefully the next club day will be better attended. Results follow later in the newsletter. It is a while away to our next event, the Christmas Get together / Demonstration laps scheduled for December 19th. In the mean time the Octagon series, which is well under way, plus the many events put on by other clubs should give everyone a chance to burn up a bit of rubber. For all the armchair competitors, there are the Bathurst and Surfers events coming up pretty soon, and of course the eagerly anticipated return of the V8’s at Symmons. All in all, a lot of motor sport activity still to come for the rest of 2004. NEW MEMBERS

SUBSCRIPTIONS
As mentioned in the last magazine the 2004–05 subscriptions were due on 1st July. If you still haven’t renewed, NOW is the time to do it. COVER PHOTO
The cover photo in this edition was taken at the recent club day / supersprint at Baskerville, showing a great variety of cars waiting in pit lane prior to starting out on their timed laps. If you haven’t competed in circuit events before, the club days are a great way to get involved, whether as a competitor or as an official / helper. Ask anyone on the committee how to take that first step. BITS and PIECES
As mentioned in the last newsletter, keep in mind the Classic Car Toy Run scheduled for Sunday 28th November. A collection of classic cars will leave both Launceston and Hobart on the Sunday morning to drive to Campbell Town to donate toys to benefit the charity efforts of St. Vincent de Paul. There will be food, entertainment and a Show and Shine at the Campbell Town oval. For further information and to register your interest, contact Peter Hunt (MGCC) by email at peterhunt@intas.net.au or phone him on 6331 0390. From the recent Southern Tasmanian Women for Wheels Newsletter, an amazing bit of information has emerged which I think is worth a special mention. Since 1973 the women have raised and donated over $69,000 to HSCC and the Baskerville track. This to me is an incredible effort from a small band of dedicated workers. I am sure that their efforts have significantly helped to keep motor sport going in Southern Tasmania over the last 30 odd years. A big Thank You to all those involved for all their hard work over the years. The Shannons Automotive Expo supported by the FE-HR Holden Car club of Tasmania is to be held on Sunday 17th October at the Kangaroo Bay Sports Oval at Rosny Park (opposite Eastlands Shopping Centre). You can enter your vehicle for free prior to October 11th, or late entry on the day for $10. Starting time around 10.00am and finishing around 3.00pm. The event is hoped to be an annual one and the main aim is to promote and encourage all Tasmanian motoring enthusiasts to display their vehicle irrespective of make/model/age or modifications. Contact Rodney Belbin at Shannons on 0408 314309 or Graham Knowles (FE-HR club) on 0416 039 477 for further information. The Club Motori Italia is also organising a Car Display on the Parliament House Lawns, scheduled for Saturday 23rd October. I expect the display is primarily for fine Italian machinery. For more information contact Graham Mitchell of CMI on 6239 1080. If you happen to be in Launceston on Sunday 24th October get along to the Veteran Car Club of Australia (Tasmania)’s Swap Meet at the Cameron/Cimitiere streets car park in Launceston. Activities should start at 9.00am. For any more information call the meet Co-ordinator, Ken Watts on 0411 404 560 after hours. If you are looking for somewhere different to have a beer or refreshments you could try Joe’s Garage, which recently opened in Market St. Hobart, (side street near City Hall). From the recently received flyer from them, the decor appears to have a very interesting motoring and engineering theme. WANTED
