EDITORIAL
Welcome to the January / February 2005 edition of the Sporting Motorist. Now that the Xmas and New Year period has faded into the past, the motor sport activity for this year has started to get underway. It is a while back, but you may all remember that we finished off the 2004 year with the club’s Xmas function / demonstration lap event out at Baskerville on Sunday 19th December. All in all it was a successful day, though the weather could have been a little kinder, possibly this kept a few people away.
Thirty eight people signed on as passengers for the demonstration laps,
this being a mix of MS Society and Make A Wish visitors, plus some family
and friends of HSCC. We had six youngsters aged between 12 and 18 who also
participated. Santa’s mid day visit was appreciated by all. Thanks to Peter
Shaw for his appearance as ‘Santa’, and also special thanks to the nine drivers
for providing their time, cars and expertise (four from the Derwent Valley).
As usual, Michael Cowie this time ably assisted by Jane Dennis, both did
a great job with the BBQ. Another special mention also to Motorsports Tasmania
Pty Ltd for their valued support in providing the track at minimal cost.
It is hoped to run a similar event at the end of 2005, possibly with a greater
number of cars, which we hope will be complemented by many more disadvantaged
people. As summarised by our club’s president, we all had an enjoyable day
with no track incidents, plenty of thrills for the participants along with
a free BBQ and a bit of Xmas spirit thrown in by our club. (see testimonials
below)

NEW MEMBERS
Since the last newsletter the following people have joined the club. We welcome them all and hope to see them at various club events throughout the year. Timothy Robson – Hobart – LC Torana Murray Richards – Claremont – rebuilding an FJ Holden Deiter Leahy – West Moonah – Rover SDI and Holden Kingswood Joss Fenton – North Hobart – VB Commodore and LX Torana HELP Unfortunately for the club our recently appointed secretary, Scott Waters is about to relocate to the Northern part of the State. This is a great disappointment to the committee, as I am sure Scott was going to become a great asset to the HSCC in this role. Sorry to see you go, Scott. This however leaves a great opportunity for someone with similar enthusiasm as Scott, to step in and fill this important role as Club Secretary. The role is not as daunting as you may first think. The committee meets once per month in Hobart and the secretary’s role is to take the minutes, type them up and then distribute them to committee members before the next monthly meeting. There is also a small amount of correspondence that comes and goes and is either filed or needs to be attended to, usually after direction from the President or committee. New memberships and renewals are handled by Herby and race meetings are organised by a race committee, of which the secretary could become involved if they wanted to. My guestimation is that it requires 1 or 2 hrs. per week to fill the role effectively. A computer and printer can be supplied to the lucky applicant if required. So, please give it some serious thought and if you can help out, our President Ray Williams would love to hear from you, on 0418 124 171. Alternatively, you could ring our devoted Treasurer, Michael Cowie on 6249 8661. BITS and PIECES HSCC Clubrooms: At present the club has in excess of $25K in the bank. There has been ongoing discussion about what is the best thing we can do for members with some of this money. The committee has agreed in principal to build a clubroom at Baskerville, so as to be available for members and guests at race meetings, club days and other club events. This room is proposed to be attached to the existing MST shed next to the scrutineering area. We have been obtaining quotes on the supply and erection of the structure and hopefully at the next committee meeting we can further advance this project. I will keep you informed of progress as things develop. April Race Meeting: This is scheduled for Sunday 10th of April. It will cater for cars in the usual classes run at past race meetings by the HSCC. So put April 10th in your calendar NOW. June Race Meeting: It was hoped to have a field of AUSSIE RACE CARS as a feature for this meeting. However after considerable work by our President this will unfortunately not happen in 2005. Negotiations are still taking place and there is every chance of a round of their series being a part of our race meeting at Baskerville early in 2006. The committee is therefore throwing around ideas for an alternative theme for our June meeting. We will keep you informed of progress as the race meeting comes closer. Committee Expertise: At the last committee meeting we acknowledged the fact that some new members to the club (and older ones) may need some assistance beginning their motor sport activities. Whether it is to do with paperwork required in obtaining a Log book for a car, car preparation needed before fronting the scrutineers for the first time, or simply what to do when you enter for your first Regularity or Race meeting event. The committee has a combined wealth of knowledge in all these areas, so give one of them a call. If that person can’t answer your specific questions, they will certainly point you in the direction of someone who can.
